In October, I am going with a medical team for 2 weeks of voluntary work in North East Uganda, into a region that has known constant civil war for many years.
HIV infection and AIDS are constant realities, leaving many young children orphaned, and infected with the virus. Frequently it is the older siblings who do their best to parent the youngsters even though they are little more than children themselves. Many adults ‘adopt’ orphaned children often at least doubling the size of their family, and putting huge strain on their resources.
I will be travelling with Mission Direct to Kumi Hospital with a small team of medically qualified people from the UK. The team will include two or three qualified psychotherapists, and counsellors experienced in working with emotionally traumatised adults and children. Our focus will be on extending the knowledge and skills of the ‘House Parents’ who create small family groups and care for the orphans in ‘safe houses’.
We will also bring new skills and techniques to the local medical staff who offer psychological support to the physically and emotionally traumatised people who have survived brutal raids on their villages from the ‘Lords Liberation Army’.
Please would you offer your financial and prayer support to this difficult and rewarding work? All the money that is raised, will go to buy much needed Hospital equipment like pre-term baby blankets and clothes, special dressings, blood pressure machines etc. I will take the latest teaching aids, and charts for training the medical staff.
You can donate on line, (put in link here) by cheque or by cash in an envelope. And please, if you pay tax, complete a Gift Aid form so that Mission Direct can claim back a healthy proportion of your gift from the tax man/woman! When we have arrived, we will post regular blogs on the missiondirect.org website so that you can follow what’s happening!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!
