Memorial Rally

Renuka bumped into some folk looking for the war memorial the other day. They are planning a mass motorbike ride through Derbyshire visiting all the memorials. Thought this letter might be of interest to the village folk:

Hi All

After several attempts at completing a recce of the route I now have some idea as to what time we will be arriving at your location.

The initial starting point and time will be 08:00 hours in Alfreton by the war memorial. After placing the poppy cross, we depart at 08:30 hours for:

Matlock Bath where our ETA is 08:55 hours

Belper – 09:25 hours

Ripley – 10:00 hours

Heanor – 10:25 hours

Derby – 11:15 hours

Ashbourne – 12:00 hours and a one-hour lunch break

Buxton – 13:45 hours. It may be that due to circumstances beyond our control – there will be a procession and a well dressing ceremony taking place very close to the time we expect to be arriving and I am told there could possibly be a build-up of traffic that must be allowed to clear before we can leave, therefore it may be that we cannot leave Buxton until around 14:15 hours

Castleton – ?15:00 hours

Hope – ?15:25 hours

Grindleford – ?15:50 hours

Chesterfield – ?16:50 hours

Clay Cross – ?17:30 hours

Shirland – ?18:00 hours

It is hoped that we will see members of your branch by your War Memorial to give your support to the, hoped, 30 to 40 riders taking part. As you will see in the subject line of this email, this ride is a sponsored event where all riders taking part will be collecting sponsorship in aid of the Poppy Appeal and to this we will also be carrying a couple of collecting buckets/boxes should any of your members wish to make a donation.

We will have with us at least one journalist; possibly one from the Derbyshire Times based in Chesterfield and a confirmed journalist from Ashbourne, who is also associated with the Derby Telegraph. BBC Radio Derby and Central TV have also been invited to each come along to interview/film/photograph the riders.

Looking forward to meeting you.

Many regards

UPDATE (25th June):

Hello!

Just wanted to add this bit to the news already on Grindleford.com if you can put it on.They don’t appear to have put the date on their itinerary.

The Memorial Rally is taking place on Sunday 6th July by The Derbyshire Riders Branch of the Royal British Legion. They are going to be paying their respects at The Grindleford War Memorial at approximately 3.30 p.m. They will be laying a wreath and wooden remembrance crosses in memory of all those who have died in conflicts. It is a sponsored bike ride to raise money for the Poppy Appeal and Grindleford Branch of The Royal British Legion are supporting them and will be donating £50 to them, and any donations will be welcomed by them. Everybody is welcome to be there.
